Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.

Impact beyond your organisation

UN Sustainability Goals

Thankfully CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) is now an expectation of all employers.  Many of us choose to work with people who hold similar values to our own, and actively avoid those with conflicting values.  I'm heartened that companies are now recruiting for "values fit", not "culture fit" and I hope that many more continue to recognise the value of diversity in "how things are done around here" as long as there is alignment to a core set of values and purpose.

Shared Beliefs

I am fortunate to be able to say a hearty "YES" to clients who believe what I believe

  • Outstanding leaders require capability AND character
  • Leadership start with a desire to serve others and have a positive impact in the world
  • People inherently want to do a good job, show them how
  • Knowledge is only potential power, we must DO what we know
  • Great trust, great collaboration, great results

and whose core purpose is in some way aligned with mine.

Aligned purpose / impact beyond your organisation

One way that we can better recognise whether we are aligned is to work out which of the UN Sustainability Goals your purpose would come under, then we can compress the thousands of core purposes into just 17 "buckets"... and the fit will be "near enough is good enough".

Here are the three UN Sustainability Goals I most strongly align with, and some examples of what that looks like in practice.  After all, actions speak louder than words.

  • Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and promote lifelong learning
  • I volunteer my coaching skills to organize, and coach, during street coaching flash mobs on behalf of our people’s coach. Making coaching available free of charge to those living in less affluent areas of the UK. [Photo: me briefing the volunteer team I attracted and led]

  • Goal 3:  Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
  • I gave a TEDx talk on “How to Solve the Stress Epidemic” to share simple resilience habits that are free, fast and easy.

  • Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries
  • Fairness is one of our families core values.
  • I volunteer as a “human book” as part of the Human Library and have conversations with “readers” who want to better understand an aspect of diversity that I have personal experience of.

Q: Which of the 17 UN Sustainability Goals is/are closest to the impact you would wish to have beyond your job/organisation? What does that look like in practice?
