Turning Bold Ideas into Action

Did you find find inspiration for your bold idea? A bold idea means different things to different people; you might want to cure cancer, run a marathon, start a family, achieve double-digit revenue growth or start a rock band in your fifties. Whatever your bold idea here are 5 essential ingredients for turning bold ideas into action.

None of them are optional – if it was easy everyone would be doing it!

  1. You need PASSION because we are passionate about ideas that resonate with our core values. Passion helps us to get buy-in from others and gives us the energy and tenacity to overcome any obstacles...release your inner superhero!
  2. You need FOCUS because big goals demand a lot of us and being crystal clear about what we want to achieve and WHY helps others to buy-in and they’ll recruit others. What’s your SMART goal?... inspirationally phrased please! ... write it down... refer to it often. Maximum 3 goals per year.
  3. You need a PLAN because answering the who, what, when, where, why and how – even in outline – ensures that the idea is “just beyond possible” i.e. close enough to motivate and out-of-reach enough to inspire.
  4. You need RESOURCES because that’s life! In addition to time, money, skills etc you’ll also need personal resources of trust, resilience and agility to respond to change. If you haven’t got all the resources you need to finish but you’ve got enough to start then start anyway and find a way to make it happen.
  5. You need ACTION because actions speak louder than words. Start immediately, even if your first action is to tell someone about your idea – allowing all your passion to come to the fore. Rally your cheerleaders, get a coach*, be visible and accountable for achieving your bold idea. [*See Mandela Day blog for complimentary coaching offer]

One of my favourite quotes is from Jim Rohn:

“The reason for setting goals is to entice you to become the person it takes to achieve them”

What are your 3 goals for 2014?

Best wishes

Angela did a great job of facilitating the 3-day workshop with the senior engineering stakeholders. After some well-managed creative conflict we arrived at consensus for a simplified and globally applicable development program, which will ensure our sizeable graduate population is well-equipped to fulfil our early career talent needs into the future.
